Greater Bandung continues to face mobility challenges due to the heavy reliance on private vehicles, particularly motorcycles and cars. In response to this issue, Tan Lie Ing conducted research in the Doctor of Civil Engineering Study Program at Universitas Tarumanagara (Untar) through her dissertation titled “Pemodelan Pemilihan Moda Transportasi dengan Adanya Layanan Light Rail Transit di Bandung Raya” (“Transportation Mode Choice Modeling with the Introduction of Light Rail Transit Services in Greater Bandung”), which she presented during an open dissertation defense at Untar Campus I on Thursday (9/7/2026).

The study examined transportation users’ preferences, estimated the probability of mode choice, and evaluated the influence of waiting time and travel cost on people’s decisions to use the Light Rail Transit (LRT) system. The research employed discrete choice models and a mixed logit model using an unbalanced panel dataset covering eight transportation alternatives: ride-hailing cars, private cars, ride-hailing motorcycles, private motorcycles, public minivans (angkot), buses, the Greater Bandung local railway, and the LRT.

“The analysis was conducted using six utility-determining variables, including waiting time, travel time, travel cost, comfort, and safety. The model estimation results indicate that waiting time and travel cost are the two most influential factors in people’s decisions to choose the LRT,” said Tan, who currently serves as a lecturer at Universitas Kristen Maranatha.

After presenting her research before the dissertation examination committee, including Principal Promoter Prof. Ir. Ade Sjafruddin, M.Sc., Ph.D., Co-Promoter Dr. Ir. Najid, M.T., and Untar Rector Prof. Dr. Amad Sudiro, S.H., M.H., M.Kn., M.M., who served as Chair of the Examination Committee, the panel concluded that, based on the evaluation of various policy scenarios, fare integration between the LRT and feeder bus services represents the most effective strategy for improving public transportation services.

“Based on the evaluation of various policy scenarios, fare integration between the LRT and feeder bus services is the most optimal approach for developing public transportation services. Such integration is expected to encourage greater public interest in using public transportation while supporting the development of LRT services in Greater Bandung,” Tan concluded. At the conclusion of the defense, she was officially conferred as Untar’s 114th Doctor of Civil Engineering. (VC/YS)
