National Press Day (HPN), celebrated every February 9th, is not only an occasion to honor the contribution of the press in the development of democracy in Indonesia but also serves as a platform for solidarity among journalists across the country.
According to the official website of the Indonesian Journalists Association (PWI), HPN 2025 carries the theme “The Press Guards Food Security for National Independence” with the slogan “Kalsel, Gateway to Kalimantan’s Logistics.” The selection of South Kalimantan as the host for this year’s celebration is a significant symbol in efforts to strengthen national food security through the role of the press.
The commemoration of HPN also serves as a moment of reflection for the world of journalism education, including the Journalism Department at the Faculty of Communication, Universitas Tarumanagara (Fikom Untar). Journalism education plays a strategic role in shaping journalists who are not only skilled in writing news but also understand journalistic ethics and the challenges faced by the media in the digital age.
The press plays a crucial role in safeguarding freedom of speech, overseeing government activities, and disseminating accurate information to educate the public. In this regard, the Journalism Department at Fikom Untar contributes to preparing a generation of competent, professional, and ethical journalists.
Becoming a journalist requires not only technical skills but also a deep understanding of the values of press freedom, objectivity, and the accuracy of information. Therefore, National Press Day serves as a reminder of the importance of journalism education that is relevant to the evolving media landscape, enabling journalists to face digital challenges and ensure the delivery of trustworthy information to the public.
Happy National Press Day 2025! May the Indonesian press continue to progress and make a real contribution in strengthening democracy. (VC/YS/AJ/VC)
