On May 12, 2025, Buddhists around the world celebrated Vesak Day 2569 BE. Vesak commemorates three major events in the life of Siddhartha Gautama: his birth, the attainment of enlightenment, and his passing (parinirvana). More than just a religious ritual, Vesak carries a universal message that is relevant to all of humanity, regardless of religion or culture.
One of the important values highlighted during Vesak is tolerance. Siddhartha Gautama emphasized the importance of mutual respect and understanding of differences. In the midst of Indonesia’s diversity, tolerance becomes a key pillar in creating a harmonious social life. Additionally, Vesak teaches the importance of kindness, where simple actions like helping others, speaking gently, or showing empathy become real practices in everyday life.
Juvinto, the Chairman of the Dharmayana Student Activity Unit at Untar, expressed his hopes regarding the spirit of tolerance and kindness within the campus environment.
“As a Buddhist practitioner and activist at Untar, I have great hopes for the spirit of tolerance and kindness in our campus, which is home to diverse ethnicities, races, and religions. In Buddhist teachings, we recognize the concept of Metta, which is boundless universal love. Practicing Metta means cultivating compassion and goodwill toward all beings, regardless of differences,” he said.
He added that through the spirit of Metta, the entire academic community can support each other, live together harmoniously, and cultivate values of kindness in their environment.
Additionally, the value of wisdom is at the core of Vesak teachings. Wisdom encourages individuals to reflect, understand life deeply, and make decisions based on ethics and good intentions, not just fleeting emotions. As the next generation of the nation, students are expected to apply this wisdom both in academic life and in social interactions.
Not only in student activities, but the religious student organizations at Untar also serve as platforms for students to develop their faith, strengthen cross-cultural friendships, and hone organizational skills. The Untar campus environment, which values cultural and religious diversity, reinforces the spirit of openness for everyone, regardless of their background.
Happy Vesak Day 2569 BE.
Sabbe Satta Bhavantu Sukhitatta — May all living beings be happy.
