The Doctoral Program in Management Science at Untar held an open dissertation defense on Tuesday (02/06/2026) at Untar Campus I. On the occasion, Promovendus Edi Purwanto was officially conferred as the program’s 24th doctoral graduate after earning a distinction for his academic achievement.
In his dissertation, Dr. Edi Purwanto explored the topic, “Determinants of Electric Vehicle Purchase Intentions Among Urban Communities in Greater Jakarta.” The study highlights the relatively low adoption rate of electric vehicles in Indonesia’s urban areas, despite the global shift toward electric mobility as a strategic initiative to reduce carbon emissions and promote environmental sustainability.
The research developed an integrative model that combines several theoretical frameworks, namely the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT), Social Exchange Theory, and Customer Value Theory.
“Variabel yang dikaji meliputi kepedulian lingkungan, ekspektasi kinerja, infrastruktur pengisian daya, waktu pengisian, harga, biaya operasional, serta insentif pemerintah, dengan sikap konsumen sebagai variabel mediasi utama,” terang pria yang juga bekerja sebagai Direktur Lembaga Penelitian & Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat dan dosen di Universitas Pembangunan Jaya.
Dr. Edi further explained that the study employed a quantitative approach using a survey of urban residents across the Greater Jakarta area. The data were analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) to examine the relationships among variables within the proposed model.
The findings reveal that environmental, technological, economic, and policy-related factors significantly influence consumer attitudes. Furthermore, consumer attitude was found to be the key mediator affecting the intention to purchase electric vehicles.
Before the principal promoter, Prof. Dr. Ir. Agustinus Purna Irawan, M.T., M.M., IPU., A.E., and the chair of the defense session, Prof. Dr. Amad Sudiro, S.H., M.H., M.Kn., M.M., the open defense concluded with the affirmation that the study offers an integrative model combining behavioral, technological, economic, and policy perspectives within the context of electric vehicle adoption in developing countries. The findings are expected to contribute to academic discourse while also serving as a reference for policymakers, industry stakeholders, and the development of Indonesia’s electric vehicle ecosystem.
