Synopsis

The book Transformation of Space: Interior Design Supporting Sustainable Development Goals serves as a concrete manifestation of the Interior Design discipline’s role in addressing the challenges of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This collection of 16 research and community service articles by lecturers of the Interior Design Study Program, Faculty of Art and Design, Universitas Tarumanagara (Untar), presents a holistic and multidimensional perspective on how design acts as a catalyst in creating better environments, inclusive societies, and responsible growth.

The book explores a broad spectrum of topics, ranging from the role of design in enhancing well-being and education through studies on child-friendly interiors and mural wall applications, to in-depth discussions on energy efficiency and climate mitigation, including studies on natural lighting comfort in Zero Net Carbon schools and air-conditioning innovations in oil refinery areas. Readers are invited to explore the integration of sustainability principles in the creative process, such as the use of BIM technology, the integration of Design Thinking, and material exploration, including studies on Indoor Air Quality (IAQ). Beyond theoretical discussions, this compilation also presents real-world community-based practices conducted collaboratively by academics and design practitioners, including sustainable design assistance for mosque public facilities and sustainability initiatives with the Bantargebang scavenger community.

The book concludes by emphasizing the importance of institutional collaboration between the Interior Design Study Program of Universitas Tarumanagara and external partners. This work underscores Interior Design as a discipline that is socially, environmentally, and strategically responsible, serving as an important reference for academics, designers, and policymakers in shaping a better and more sustainable future, both locally and globally.
