“Why does a man use skincare?” Questions like this can still be heard in society. For a long time, body care has been more closely associated with women. Various beauty and skincare products have also traditionally been marketed as products for women.

This association does not mean that body care is only necessary for women. Men and women have different physical characteristics, but both need to take care of their bodies to maintain cleanliness and health. Skin needs to be cleansed and protected, hair needs to be cared for, dental health needs to be maintained, as do the cleanliness of nails and other parts of the body.

When it comes to skincare, the needs of men and women may also differ. Skin condition, daily activities, age, environment, and individual habits can determine the type of care needed. However, using facial cleansers, moisturizers, and sunscreen is not simply a matter of appearance, but can also be part of maintaining skin health.

The same applies to personal care. Taking care of hair, keeping nails clean, using personal care products, shaving, and maintaining dental health are all part of habits that support cleanliness and comfort. For men, personal care can be adjusted to their needs and physical characteristics. Similarly, women can choose routines based on their individual needs.

For many years, women have had a stronger association with the world of personal care. The beauty industry has also traditionally targeted female consumers more heavily. As a result, self-care has often been associated with femininity. Men who pay close attention to their appearance may sometimes still be viewed as not fitting prevailing ideas of masculinity.

These views are gradually changing. Growing awareness of health and hygiene has encouraged more men to pay attention to personal care. Social media has also expanded access to information about skin health, hair care, personal hygiene, and other forms of self-care.

This shift does not mean that men need to follow women’s personal care routines, or vice versa. Body care should also not become a requirement to meet certain appearance standards. Men and women have different needs, characteristics, and personal care preferences.

Most importantly, taking care of the body is part of maintaining health. Women can have personal care routines that suit their needs, and so can men. Therefore, self-care should not be viewed as an activity associated only with women.

Ultimately, men and women do not have to be the same to share equally important needs when it comes to maintaining their health. Self-care is not about being more feminine or masculine, but about taking responsibility for one’s own cleanliness, health, and comfort. (VC/YS)
