The Interior Design Study Program of the Faculty of Fine Arts and Design (FSRD) at Universitas Tarumanagara held a rattan design workshop on May 11–12, 2026, at Untar Campus I. The activity was part of the students’ learning process in understanding rattan materials through both design approaches and hands-on practice.
The workshop featured rattan practitioners Alfath Kurniadi and the team from Jelajah Rattan, as well as Zulyo Kumara from Zulyo Kumara Studio. The speakers shared their knowledge on the characteristics of rattan materials, processing techniques, and their application in furniture design.
During the workshop sessions, participants were introduced to various types of rattan and the material processing methods commonly used in furniture design. Students also learned technical aspects and design details to ensure that the resulting designs align with both functionality and the characteristics of the material.

Alfath Kurniadi stated that the workshop provided participants with new insights into rattan materials. “This activity offers new insights for participants regarding rattan details, technical learning, and an introduction to rattan materials,” he said.
On the same occasion, Untar Interior Design lecturer Ferdinand, S.Ds., M.Ars., explained that the workshop, which is held annually, aligns with the Furniture Design III course. He expressed hope that the activity would help participants better understand the characteristics of rattan materials in the furniture prototyping process, allowing the resulting designs to become more functional and effective.
