Faculty of Medicine (FK) Untar lecturer, Dr. dr. Shirly Gunawan, Sp.FK., served as a speaker at the international seminar titled “Antibiotic Resistance Updates” organized by INTI International University, Malaysia, on Wednesday (10/9/2025).
During her online presentation, Shirly explained the fundamentals of antibiotics, covering an overview of antimicrobials, the types and mechanisms of antibiotics, and the dangers of antibiotic misuse. She highlighted the use of antibiotics without a doctor’s prescription or contrary to medical guidelines as a common misconception that carries significant risks.
“Antibiotics are not medicines that can be used indiscriminately. When taken without a doctor’s prescription or not according to proper guidelines, they can accelerate the development of resistance, posing a serious threat to global health,” she said.
She emphasized that antibiotic resistance occurs when bacteria become resistant to medication. The condition has already become a global health concern and could endanger countless lives if not addressed seriously.
Another speaker, AP Dr. Soumya Pandit from Sharda University, India, discussed biofilms—protective layers formed by bacteria to enhance their survival—as well as the role of natural plant-derived compounds (phytochemicals) in combating harmful bacteria known as ESKAPE pathogens and MDR (multi-drug resistant) pathogens.
The international seminar served as an important platform for academics, students, and researchers to update their knowledge on antibiotic resistance while strengthening global awareness of the dangers associated with antibiotic misuse. Shirly’s participation in the forum also reflects Untar’s contribution to the international academic community, particularly in the field of medical sciences.
