In the era of intensified competition, universities are required to maintain their reputation and sustainability. One aspect that can reflect this is accreditation.

Accreditation plays an important role as an assessment of the feasibility and quality of a university in organizing the educational process, as well as a benchmark for the community in choosing a trusted educational institution.

The Importance of Accreditation

Accreditation is not just a formality requirement, but an important foundation for the sustainability of an educational institution. Unaccredited universities are not allowed to graduate students because the requirement for issuing a diploma is a recognized accreditation status.

Currently, the government through the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology (Kemendikbudristek) is implementing a new regulation that requires every study program and university to meet accreditation requirements before August 2025.

Accreditation Challenges in Indonesia

Based on data from the Director of Institutionalization of the Ministry of Research and Technology, 35% of universities in Indonesia are still not accredited, both public and private universities. This is a big challenge because without accreditation, universities cannot provide quality assurance to graduates.

In fact, 84 private universities in various regions including West Java and DKI Jakarta are threatened with closure because they do not pass accreditation.

Accreditation is not only related to the legal status of universities, but also to the future of graduates. The industrial world needs human resources (HR) who are ready to work with competencies that meet the standards.

Therefore, accreditation plays an important role in ensuring the quality of graduates in accordance with the needs of the Business and Industrial World (DUDI).

Strategic Solution for Accreditation

Seeing the number of unaccredited universities, the government needs to take various strategic steps. One solution that can be done is to require PTN or PTS that have been accredited to excel to foster universities that have not been accredited.

With strict monitoring and evaluation, as well as support in the form of grants or incentives, universities that have not met the accreditation requirements can be given the opportunity to improve their quality gradually.

In addition, there needs to be an integrated system that makes it easier for universities to enter and report the data needed for the accreditation process.

In this way, it is hoped that all universities in Indonesia, from Sabang to Merauke, can provide quality and equal education for all people.

Accreditation for Indonesia’s Future

Ultimately, accreditation is the shared responsibility of all academicians and stakeholders in higher education. By having accreditation, universities can improve their reputation, attract more prospective students, and ensure the continuity of quality education processes.

Excellent and equitable higher education will be the key for Indonesia to produce quality human resources that are able to compete in the global arena and bring Indonesia into a respected developed country in the international arena.
