Every year, June 5 is celebrated as World Environment Day.
This year, the theme is “Land restoration, desertification and drought resilience” or “Land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience,” as reported from the official website of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
Saudi Arabia will host the 2024 World Environment Day celebrations, focusing on land restoration efforts, which is one of the main pillars of the UN Decade of Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030).
Land Restoration Key to Addressing Desertification and Drought
Land restoration is a proactive measure to protect and revive ecosystems that are vital to life on earth.
Desertification and drought are serious problems that threaten the well-being of people and ecosystems around the world.
This effort aims to restore the natural functioning of ecosystems, increase soil productivity, and maintain biodiversity. This is an effort to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that have been launched by the United Nations.
Untar’s Role in Supporting SDGs
Untar plays an active role in supporting the achievement of SDGs through various environmental activities.
On Tuesday (30/4), Untar collaborated with Seasoldier Foundation to organize mangrove tree planting and beach cleaning activities at Tanjung Pasir Beach, Teluknaga, Tangerang.
This activity involved lecturers, students, and employees of Untar who together planted 650 mangrove seedlings and cleaned up trash around the beach.
Rector Prof. Dr. Ir. Agustinus Purna Irawan, M.T., M.M., I.P.U., ASEAN Eng. revealed that Untar always supports the achievement of SDGs that are always echoed with various activities, one of which is through this activity.
This event is part of community service as well as Untar’s contribution to the 14th (Life in the Sea) and 15th (Life on Land) SDGs.
Our Role in Land Restoration
Not only Untar, we also have an important role in achieving SDGs, one of which is through land restoration efforts, as follows.
1. Supporting Reforestation Program
Participating in tree planting programs can help restore degraded land.
2. Reducing Carbon Footprint
Reducing motor vehicle use and switching to eco-friendly transportation can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
3. Water Wise Use
Conserving water use in daily activities helps to preserve water availability in the future.
4. Education and Awareness
Disseminate information and raise awareness about the importance of land restoration to family, friends and surrounding communities.
World Environment Day is a golden opportunity for all of us to take concrete action towards the protection and restoration of our ecosystems.
With the theme “Land Restoration, Desertification and Drought Resilience,” we are reminded that a sustainable future depends on collective efforts to safeguard and restore our environment.
Happy World Environment Day. Let’s contribute to protecting the earth together. One small step at a time, for a better and more sustainable future.
