Every year on 12 October, Indonesia commemorates National Museum Day. The occasion serves as an opportunity to reaffirm the role of museums as institutions dedicated to preserving the nation’s cultural heritage, history, and knowledge. Through their existence, museums safeguard the values and traditions that form an essential part of the country’s national identity.

National Museum Day traces its origins to the first Indonesian Museum Congress (Musyawarah Museum se-Indonesia – MMI), held in Yogyakarta from 12–14 October 1962. The gathering produced a national commitment to strengthen the role of museums as educational and cultural institutions. Following the congress, 12 October was officially designated as National Museum Day—a reflective moment aimed at raising public awareness of the importance of preserving cultural heritage for future generations.

As technology continues to evolve, museums have transformed into more interactive learning spaces. Innovations such as virtual exhibitions, online catalogs, and technology-based tours represent adaptive efforts to ensure museums remain relevant in the digital age. These transformations not only expand educational outreach but also bring museums closer to the public, particularly younger generations who are highly familiar with technology.

Within the context of higher education, Untar actively contributes to cultural preservation through academic activities and research initiatives. Collaborations between students and lecturers from various study programs have generated a range of projects, including the development of interactive exhibition concepts, digital documentation of cultural works, and the preservation of historic architecture. These efforts reflect Untar’s commitment to using historical values as a source of inspiration for innovation and the advancement of knowledge.

Museums play a strategic role as guardians of the nation’s collective memory while also serving as instruments for character building within society. More than simply repositories of artifacts, museums have evolved into centers of learning that encourage creativity, innovation, and the growth of the creative economy.

The commemoration of National Museum Day 2025 serves as a reminder for all members of society to continue supporting museums as dynamic and living spaces. Through collaboration among educational institutions, government agencies, and the public, cultural preservation can become a bridge between the past and the future, ensuring that national values and identity remain protected amid the forces of globalization.

Happy National Museum Day 2025.
