Modern libraries are no longer merely spaces for storing books, but are evolving into technology-driven innovation hubs. This transformation became the central focus of the 4th Indonesian Higher Education Library Conference (KPPTI), organized by the Indonesian Higher Education Library Forum (FPPTI).

Carrying the theme “AI-Driven Academic Libraries: Innovation, Ethics, and the Future of Knowledge Management,” the conference brought together experts from Indonesia and abroad to discuss the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in shaping the future of literacy and knowledge management in the digital era. Over a two-day hybrid event (7–8 October 2025), participants from various universities engaged in discussions on how AI can accelerate the transformation of the library and information science sector.

In the first session, Widyasari Listyowulan, M.A., Director of Government Affairs at Microsoft Indonesia, delivered a presentation titled “Innovation in AI-Based for Education.” She emphasized that AI should enhance human potential rather than replace it. Meanwhile, Assoc. Prof. Christopher Khoo Soo Guan from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, discussed “Generative AI & Knowledge Graph as Complementary Technologies for LIS.”

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Aini Suzana Binti Ariffin, AI Policy Expert Fellow from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia and Chair of STEPAN UNESCO, highlighted the importance of ethics and policy in AI implementation in education and information systems through her presentation titled “Ethics and Policy in AI Implementation.”

The second session featured Dr. Ari Nugraha from Universitas Indonesia and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Amorn Petsom from Thailand. Dr. Ari presented “Knowledge Management in the AI Era,” focusing on strategies for managing knowledge in the midst of rapid digital development, while Dr. Amorn spoke on “Capacity Building and Digital Competency,” emphasizing the need for librarians to strengthen digital skills in response to technological disruption.

On the second day, two workshop sessions were also held. Nafi Al Kautsar Putrawan, AI Business Analyst at Nedzero/.org, led a workshop titled “From Data to Action: Using AI Agents to Simplify Library Reporting.”

The following session was delivered by Dr. Purwani Istiana, S.I.P., M.A. from Universitas Gadjah Mada, titled “Strategies for Scientific Journal Writing in the Age of AI: Leveraging Technology to Improve Publication Quality.” She emphasized that AI should be used responsibly as a tool for brainstorming and enhancing academic writing quality, without compromising originality.

At the end of the program, the organizing committee announced the winners of the IALA & ALIA Awards before concluding the event. The conference continued on its third day with a library tour across various library facilities within the Untar campus, offering participants firsthand insight into the university’s library systems and services.

Amid rapid digital transformation, KPPTI-4 served as a reflective platform highlighting the increasingly strategic role of librarians—not only as guardians of knowledge but also as connectors between humans, data, and technology in advancing national literacy. (VC/YS)
