A surge in COVID cases has occurred in recent weeks. A new variant named Nimbus (NB.1.8.1)—a descendant of Omicron—is responsible for the increased transmission rate in several regions. However, this variant does not cause more severe symptoms compared to its predecessors.
Dr. Velma Herwanto, Ph.D., Sp.PD., a lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Tarumanagara (FK Untar), affirmed that this situation has not led to a new pandemic wave but remains within the potential for an endemic phase.
“The Nimbus variant is indeed more transmissible, but it does not cause higher severity. COVID cases will continue to fluctuate, similar to seasonal flu,” explained Dr. Velma.

The public is urged to remain vigilant but not to panic. The implementation of basic health protocols, such as wearing masks in public spaces, maintaining physical distance, and washing hands after coughing, sneezing, or touching public facilities, is still considered effective in preventing transmission.
“These preventive measures are also useful for avoiding other respiratory infectious diseases. The most important thing is collective awareness to maintain cleanliness and health,” she added.
In addition to maintaining hygiene, it’s also crucial to strengthen your immune system through a healthy lifestyle—consuming nutritious food, exercising regularly, getting enough rest, and managing stress. Complete vaccination, including booster doses, is still recommended as additional protection.
For individuals exposed to COVID, it is recommended to immediately self-isolate, get plenty of rest, consume fluids, and consult a healthcare facility if symptoms worsen. Early intervention is crucial to accelerate recovery and prevent further transmission.
With discipline and a wise attitude from all layers of society, Indonesia can continue to maintain health stability during the transition to a healthy normal life. (VC/AJ/YS)
