“Blood donation is not merely a humanitarian act, but also part of a healthy lifestyle with far-reaching impact,” said Dr. Marina Maria Ludong, Sp.PK., a lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine (FK) Untar, in commemoration of World Blood Donor Day, observed every June 14. According to her, it is important for the public—especially the younger generation—to understand the benefits of blood donation and to comply with the established requirements to ensure the safety of both donors and recipients.

World Blood Donor Day serves as a crucial moment to raise global awareness about the importance of having a safe and sufficient blood supply. Around the world, the demand for blood continues to rise due to various medical conditions requiring transfusions—from accidents to chronic illnesses.

Blood donation offers dual benefits. Physically, it can reduce the risk of heart disease and high cholesterol, while also improving blood circulation. Mentally, it helps relieve stress, enhances a sense of empathy, and brings a feeling of happiness from helping others. Moreover, before donating, donors also receive a free basic health check, including heart rate, blood pressure, and hemoglobin level screening.

“If you wish to donate blood, make sure you meet several requirements, such as being 17 to 60 years old, weighing at least 50 kilograms, being physically and mentally healthy, not currently taking any medications, and for women—not being pregnant, breastfeeding, or menstruating,” added Dr. Marina. She also reminded donors to get enough rest and to eat at least two hours before the donation process.

The Faculty of Medicine at Untar, as an educational institution, is committed to instilling the values of compassion and human solidarity in every aspect of its learning process. Students are not only equipped with medical knowledge but are also encouraged to actively participate in social initiatives that strengthen the public health system.

The commemoration of World Blood Donor Day is more than just a ceremonial event—it is a call to action. Regular blood donation is a simple yet profoundly impactful form of contribution. Through this spirit of giving, the Faculty of Medicine at Untar continues to promote the development of individuals who excel not only academically but are also deeply aware of humanitarian issues and public health concerns.
