The Master of Architecture Study Program of Untar once again held an Online Seminar Series, Wednesday (14/6) through the zoom application.

Titled “Heritage & Ethics”, the online seminar invited several Indonesian architects, including professor at the Faculty of Environmental Studies at York University as well as Director of the York Center for Asian Research (YCAR) Prof. Abidin Kusno, and Secretary of the Untar Architecture Undergraduate Study Program Alvin Hadiwono, S.T., M.T.

As the moderator, the Chairman of Indonesian Architecture Association (IAI) for 2002-2005 period and Lecturer of Untar Architecture Ir. Budi A Sukada, Grand.Hons.Dipl (AA).

Explaining about “Heritage & Ethics”, Alvin explained that Teleological Ethics in cultural heritage preservation is needed.

“Ethics is a branch of thought that seeks to reflect and recommend a value that is good or wrong,” he said.

According to him, mastering ethics can preserve and maintain cultural heritage with the ability to measure the good and bad of an action based on the goals to be achieved.

Meanwhile, Prof. Abidin said that heritage & ethics is dominated by a scientific or technical approach, which has become the ethics of the world’s conservation institutions.

“The ethics of scientific materialism underlies the activities of various world conservation organizations such as UNESCO. Therefore, the most important thing for us as a heritage institution is for conservation purposes,” he said.

Furthermore, Prof. Abidin also revealed that heritage from the past always undergoes a process of selection and conservation for the present.

Closing the event, Ir. Budi Sukada revealed that the culture owned by Indonesia is extraordinary and should be preserved.

“Hopefully the Indonesian people can maintain and preserve what they already have,” he concluded. (DW/AW)
