International Conference of Construction, Infrastructure, and Materials (ICCIM) 2023 was held at Untar Auditorium on Thursday (27/7).

The third ICCIM raised the theme of “Civil Engineering for A Liveable Environment” which discussed the impact of the Civil Engineering industry on the environment and efforts to build a more sustainable, humane, and environmentally friendly industry.

Rector of Untar Prof. Dr. Ir. Agustinus Purna Irawan, M.T., M.M., I.P.U., A.E. said that this conference is a forum for academics from various countries to exchange knowledge and research experiences.

The Rector hopes that the papers produced can provide real solutions to the negative impact of construction development on environmental sustainability in the future.

Present as the key speaker, Prof. Dawn E. Lehman from the University of Washington, USA presented research on Earthquake Resistant Steel Structure Design in her research entitled “A New RC Slab to CFST Column Connection to Mitigate Collapse Resistance of Flat-Slab Structures”.

Prof. Lehman revealed the dangers of infrastructure development with flat plate materials in the face of earthquakes. Flat slab material itself is a material that is quite commonly found, economical, and easy to make.

He said that flat plate materials are not suitable for Indonesia, which is located in a seismic or earthquake-prone area. So, a design that is more damage resistant and has more strength is needed.

Furthermore, Untar lecturer Dr. Alfred J. Susilo S.T., M.Eng. Civil Engineering, FT discussed buildings with environmentally friendly construction materials in his research entitled “Design of Supporting Structure to Make Green Building Criteria”.

Dr. Alfred explained that an effective green building has supporting factors that fit the needs. These factors include the use of U-Ditch channels, solar panels, wall panels, water tanks, and sewage treatment plants (STP).

Also present as speakers were Dr. Li Hai-Ting from Shanghai Jiao Tong University China, Dr. Wikke Novalia from Monash University Australia, and Prof. H. R Pasindu from the University of Moratuwa Sri Lanka. (VW/AW)
