Not everything needs to be expressed through words. Photos, colors, shapes, clothing, and even social media content can help people express their character, mood, and identity.

Everyone expresses themselves differently. Some are comfortable sharing their thoughts through writing, while others prefer visual forms. In the era of social media, opportunities for self-expression have also expanded through photos, videos, designs, and various types of content.

According to Interior Design lecturer at the Faculty of Art and Design (FSRD) Untar Dr. Dwi Sulistyawati, S.Sn., M.T.Ars., a person’s character and emotions in visual communication cannot be represented through a single design element. Colors, shapes, materials, composition, photography, typography, and symbols can be combined to create a particular character and atmosphere.

“Visual choices should not be limited by stereotypes. The color pink does not always mean feminine, just as black or geometric shapes do not always mean masculine. The use of visual elements is more closely related to a person’s character, experiences, culture, lifestyle, and personal needs,” she explained.

Photography and symbols, for example, can convey stories through facial expressions, gestures, clothing, objects, and selected backgrounds. Meanwhile, colors and shapes can help create certain impressions without having to explain everything verbally.

Therefore, visuals are not merely about aesthetics. Behind a photo, color, or design, there are personal choices that can become part of how someone introduces and expresses themselves.

“In the end, there is no single ‘right’ way to express yourself. Everyone has the space and freedom to choose how they want to present themselves, including through visuals,” Dwi concluded. (VC/YS)
