Driven by the courage to try new things, Randy Sugiarto, a 2007 alumnus of the Faculty of Communication Sciences (Fikom) at Universitas Tarumanagara (Untar), now leads a food and beverage (F&B) business as CEO of Master Culinary Group.

Starting a business on a small scale taught Randy to get directly involved in operations and learn from different situations.

“When I started my business, I learned directly from the field. I was never embarrassed to ask questions or build relationships because those experiences taught me a lot,” he said.

The communication skills Randy gained while studying at Fikom Untar have also helped him build relationships with fellow business owners. Through networking, he has been able to exchange experiences and find various solutions to business challenges.

One of the businesses Randy is currently developing is Gococo. The coconut-based beverage brand now has around 60 outlets in cities across Indonesia. As the business grows, Gococo also prioritizes sourcing raw materials from local farmers in several regions, including West Java, Lampung, Medan, Makassar, and Surabaya.

“For us, Gococo’s growth is not just about opening more outlets. We also want that growth to benefit local farmers,” Randy said.

For Randy, his time studying at Untar also provided valuable lessons for building his business and career.

“I enjoyed studying at Untar because of its close-knit community, and I gained practical insights from experienced lecturers that have been useful for my business and career,” he said.

Randy’s journey is one example of how the knowledge, experience, and relationships gained at Untar can continue to support business development and create a positive impact on society. (CS/PA)
