The day after Independence Day, August 18 is commemorated as Indonesia’s Constitution Day, marking the ratification of the 1945 Constitution as the first constitution of the Republic of Indonesia. Containing the fundamental rules and principles governing Indonesia’s state system, the 1945 Constitution serves as the foundation of Indonesian law and the basis for state administration, regulating citizens’ fundamental rights, the structure of government, and the principles of democracy.

The Constitution establishes the formation and limitations of the powers of state institutions, regulates relations among state institutions, and governs the relationship of power between state institutions and citizens.

According to Prof. Dr. Tundjung Herning Sitabuana, S.H., C.N., M.Hum., a lecturer at the Faculty of Law of Universitas Tarumanagara (Untar), the commemoration of independence should not end with ceremonial activities but should continue through the internalization of constitutional values in the attitudes and behavior of all Indonesians. This can be achieved through both formal education, from preschool through higher education, and informal education.

“It is not merely about commemorating the ratification of the 1945 Constitution as the nation’s constitution. Constitution Day should also serve as a constant reminder that law enforcement must be carried out in accordance with Pancasila and the mandate of the 1945 Constitution of the Republic of Indonesia,” Tundjung emphasized.

In practice, Untar promotes the understanding that the Constitution should serve as a guide for life in society, as a nation, and as a state, while strengthening constitutional awareness among the entire academic community. (CJ/YS)
