Environmental issues continue to become a global concern amid increasing challenges such as climate change, pollution, and the depletion of natural resources. These conditions call for collective awareness and the involvement of various sectors, including higher education institutions, in maintaining environmental sustainability.
In this context, universities hold a strategic position as centers of education and agents of change. The campus environment functions not only as a place for academic learning, but also as a platform for fostering awareness and encouraging concrete environmental conservation practices among students.
As part of the global movement, Earth Day, commemorated every April 22, carries a strong historical background. The observance was first held in 1970 in the United States on the initiative of Gaylord Nelson as a response to increasing environmental damage caused by industrial activities. The date of April 22 was strategically chosen to maximize student participation, making Earth Day closely connected to the world of education from its inception.
Universitas Tarumanagara (Untar) has also taken part in these efforts through various initiatives that support sustainable lifestyles. Efforts such as waste management, reducing plastic use, and organizing environmental education activities have become part of the university’s commitment to building a campus culture that is more environmentally conscious.
In line with technological advancements, students today also have broad access to information regarding global environmental issues. This creates opportunities to increase understanding while encouraging involvement in various sustainability-focused programs, both at local and international levels.
Through active participation within the campus environment, students are expected to become part of ongoing efforts to maintain ecosystem balance. Awareness built during university years serves as an important foundation for creating a generation that is more caring and responsible toward the environment. (KS/YS)
