The Interior Design (DI) Study Program of the Faculty of Arts and Design (FSRD) at Universitas Tarumanagara participated in the international furniture exhibition Indonesia International Furniture Expo 2026, held from 5–8 March 2026 at Indonesia Convention Exhibition BSD City. Student works were exhibited at the University Booth area located along the Hall 2 corridor.

The participation carried the theme “Living Heritage: Reinterpreting Indonesian Heritage for Today”, showcasing students’ furniture design works in the form of chair collections inspired by explorations of Indonesian culture. Through the exhibition, Universitas Tarumanagara introduced student design works to the international public while demonstrating how Indonesian cultural heritage can be translated into contemporary furniture designs that remain relevant to the needs of the global market.

The exhibited works highlighted elements of Indonesian culture, traditions, and craftsmanship by utilizing local materials as part of the design identity. This approach is expected to strengthen the competitiveness of Indonesian furniture design at the international level.

Rector of Universitas Tarumanagara Prof. Dr. Amad Sudiro, S.H., M.H., M.Kn., M.M., also visited the Untar booth, accompanied by Dean of FSRD Untar Dr. Maitri Widya Mutiara, S.Ds., M.M., and Head of the Untar Interior Design Study Program Anastasia Cinthya Gani, S.Ds., M.Ars.

The activity also involved several Indonesian designers who served as mentors in the students’ design process, namely Eugenio Hendro, Zulyo Kumara, and Vincentius Aldi Masella. IFEX 2026 was attended by international buyers and designers from various countries.

Dean of FSRD Untar stated that the participation of the DI Study Program in IFEX marked an important step in introducing the potential of students’ designs to the international industry. “Through a culture-based design approach, students are encouraged to transform Indonesia’s cultural heritage into design products with strong identity while remaining relevant to the needs of the global market,” she said.

The showcased works were the result of learning processes in the Furniture Design course, which emphasizes cultural exploration as a source of inspiration. All chair collections went through a design process under the guidance of professional designer mentors. Some of the works were also the result of design research integrating cultural values into the visual language of design.

The participation also received positive responses from visitors and international buyers attending the exhibition, including Indonesian and international designers who appreciated the cultural exploration and design quality of the students’ works, which were considered to have strong potential for development in the global market.

The Untar Interior Design booth also received the Best Booth University award in the university category at IFEX 2026. The award was presented among seven universities participating in the University Booth area as recognition for the exhibition concept, quality of works, and design presentation showcased during the event.
