Every 9 February, National Press Day is commemorated as a reflection of the long journey of the Indonesian press in maintaining an open, critical, and responsible information space. The commemoration traces its roots to the establishment of the Persatuan Wartawan Indonesia (PWI) in 1946, which marked an important milestone in Indonesian journalism and symbolized the press’s commitment to serving the public interest. From the era of independence struggles to today’s digital age, the press has continuously transformed in response to changing times while upholding its core principle: delivering truth to society. Amid these developments, students have emerged as part of an educated generation growing alongside the evolution of media.

In 2026, National Press Day carries the theme “Healthy Press, Sovereign Economy, Strong Nation.” The theme emphasizes the importance of a professional and sustainable press ecosystem. A credible press plays a crucial role in creating reliable information that can support national development. Within this framework, students occupy a strategic position as a group that not only consumes information, but also learns how information is produced, verified, and disseminated responsibly.

Amid the rapid flow of digital information, the meaning of National Press Day has become increasingly relevant for higher education. Students who live within ecosystems dominated by social media and online news are required to become more critical in distinguishing facts, opinions, and misinformation. This awareness positions students not merely as recipients of information, but also as active participants in maintaining a healthy information environment.

The commemoration of National Press Day serves as a reminder that the quality of the press and the quality of education are closely interconnected in nation-building efforts. By fostering a culture of media literacy among students, universities play an active role in strengthening a healthy and responsible information ecosystem. (KS/YS)
