Every year on 10 October, the world observes World Mental Health Day as an opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of maintaining mental well-being. The commemoration serves as a reminder that mental health is an essential component of overall well-being, just as important as physical health.
Mental health plays a significant role in shaping how individuals think, feel, and behave. Fundamentally, good mental health refers to a condition in which a person can function optimally in daily life, emotionally, psychologically, and socially.
According to Untar lecturer and clinical psychologist, Debora Basaria, M.Psi., Psi., maintaining mental health is the first step toward achieving holistic well-being. She highlighted four simple ways to support mental health: practicing self-appreciation, managing stress, maintaining social connections, and setting realistic goals.
“When we appreciate ourselves, we provide unconditional support and care for who we are. This can increase our sense of happiness and life satisfaction. By managing stress effectively, we are more likely to maintain good mental health. Meanwhile, socializing with people we trust allows us to feel better because we have someone with whom we can share our thoughts and experiences,” Debora explained.
In the dynamic environment of higher education—where students face academic pressures, deadlines, and the challenge of balancing studies with personal life—maintaining mental well-being becomes increasingly important. The reality of university life, with its demanding schedules and multiple responsibilities, requires individuals to effectively manage both academic and personal commitments in order to avoid burnout.
To address these challenges, Debora recommended two practical strategies for managing daily life:
1. Managing Time Wisely
Effective time management enables students to complete academic responsibilities without feeling overwhelmed. This can be achieved by utilizing calendar applications on smartphones or marking important activities on a physical calendar at home.
2. Creating a To-Do List
Setting priorities and allocating sufficient time for rest are simple yet effective ways to reduce stress and improve productivity. Students can implement this strategy through reminder applications or by carrying a small notebook containing a daily to-do list to ensure important tasks are not forgotten.
As a higher education institution that recognizes the importance of balancing mental and physical well-being, Untar is committed to creating a supportive and inclusive campus environment for all members of its academic community.
One tangible manifestation of this commitment is the Tarumanagara Psychology Centre, also known as the Psychological Guidance and Consultation Center (PBKP) Untar. The facility provides a safe space for students, lecturers, and administrative staff to share their concerns, seek professional consultation, and receive psychological support.

Located on the second floor of Building L, Campus I Untar, the Tarumanagara Psychology Centre offers a variety of services designed to support mental well-being. These include individual counseling, stress management training, and seminars on mental health, all aimed at helping members of the academic community better understand and manage their emotions.
The observance of World Mental Health Day serves as a reminder to all members of the academic community that it is acceptable not to feel okay all the time, and that seeking help is not a sign of weakness, but rather an act of courage and a step toward healing and personal growth. (VC/YS)
