National Film Day, commemorated annually on March 30, marks a significant milestone in Indonesian cinema, honoring the production of “Darah dan Doa” (The Long March) by Usmar Ismail in 1950. This year, the 75th anniversary of National Film Day is celebrated with a range of activities, including the official launch of a commemorative logo by the Indonesian Film Board (BPI), symbolizing the spirit of collaboration and unity within the national film industry.
Adding to the excitement of the celebration, the Indonesian film industry is set to release an animated film titled “Jumbo”, directed by Ryan Adriandhy. The film tells the story of Don, a young boy who embarks on an adventure to put on a performance at a local talent show. “Jumbo” is scheduled for release during the 2025 Eid holiday and will be screened in 17 countries, including several in Europe.
The growing quality of Indonesian films is increasingly evident through the emergence of works that have earned prestigious awards, such as the Indonesian Film Festival (FFI) and the Indonesian Film Appreciation (AFI). Educational institutions like Tarumanagara University (UNTAR) also play a vital role in supporting national film production through the Faculty of Communication Science (Fikom), which offers in-depth studies on the techniques and industry of audiovisual screen production.
The commemoration of National Film Day is expected to enhance appreciation for the diversity and quality of Indonesian cinema, while encouraging the public to support the creative works of the nation’s talents. With the release of films like “Jumbo”, the Indonesian film industry demonstrates its great potential to compete on the international stage, while also enriching the nation’s cultural heritage.
