As global awareness of environmental issues increases, green technology is now a major focus in many fields, including mechanical engineering.
Green technology plays an important role in supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by creating environmentally friendly innovations.
Contribution of Green Technology in Mechanical Development
According to the Secretary of Untar’s Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate Study Program Didi Widya Utama, S.T., M.T., Ph.D., green technology has driven significant changes in machine design.
Engineers now strive to use environmentally friendly materials and renewable energy sources that produce less pollution.
These changes not only aim to reduce environmental impact but also to create more sustainable solutions for the industry.
Challenges in Green Technology Implementation
While the benefits are clear, the implementation of green technology in the manufacturing industry faces several challenges. One of the most significant is cost.
“The use of green materials and renewable energy often increases production costs,” Didi said.
This means companies have to consider these additional costs in the price of their end products, which can be a barrier to widespread adoption of green technology.
The Role of Green Technology in Reducing Environmental Impacts
Green technology has proven to be effective in reducing the industry’s negative impact on the environment. By using biodegradable materials and non-fossil energy, air and water pollution can be minimized.
In addition, the production waste generated is also more easily treated without harming the environment. These measures help create a larger and more sustainable production process.
The Role of Green Technology in SDGs
Green technology is highly relevant to several goals of the SDGs, specifically SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), SDG 13 (Addressing Climate Change), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
“Green technologies support manufacturing sustainability globally and can help reduce energy costs in the long run,” Didi explained.
The implementation of technology in the industrial sector helps maintain a balance between economic progress and environmental sustainability.
Importance of Green Technology Education
Didi emphasizes that education plays a key role in raising awareness about green technology.
Through an up-to-date curriculum, Untar Mechanical Engineering students are introduced to green technology concepts and applications early on.
“Students can recognize and implement green technology on a research scale and during their industrial internships,” Didi concluded.
Collaboration between education and industry will produce useful innovations and prepare students to face future industrial challenges.
With a comprehensive approach, Untar is committed to supporting the development of green technology in Mechanical Engineering, creating a generation of engineers who are environmentally sound and ready to contribute to industrial sustainability. (KJ/AW/KJ)
