April 22 is celebrated as Earth Day around the world. This moment is set aside to celebrate the beauty of the universe and to consider actions we can take to protect the earth, the planet we live on.
Earth Day was first celebrated in 1970 in response to people’s growing concerns about pollution and environmental damage. The movement led to the passage of important environmental laws in the United States, including the Clean Air and Endangered Species Acts, and the establishment of environmental agencies such as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
Many countries later adopted similar laws, and in 2016, the United Nations (UN) chose Earth Day as the day to sign the Paris Climate Agreement.
According to the official Earth Day website, the theme for Earth Day 2024 is “Planet vs. Plastics”. It emphasizes the commitment to end the use of plastics for the health of people and our planet, demanding a 60% reduction in the production of all plastics by 2040.
The theme calls for advocating for widespread awareness of the health risks of plastics, the immediate elimination of all single-use plastics, pressing for a strong UN Treaty on Plastic Pollution, and demanding an end to the fast fashion trend.
Here are some tips to help keep the earth healthy.
1. Reduce Plastic Use
Plastic is one of the world’s biggest environmental polluters. Start by reducing the use of single-use plastics and switch to reusable items.
2. Use Eco-Friendly Transportation
Reduce carbon emissions by using public transportation, cycling, or walking whenever possible. If using a personal vehicle, consider switching to an electric or hybrid car.
3. Support Renewable Energy
Switch to renewable energy sources such as solar and wind energy at home where possible. Support policies and initiatives that encourage the use of renewable energy at the local and national level.
4. Contribute to Environmental Restoration Programs
Join tree planting events, beach cleanups, or other environmental restoration projects in your local neighborhood. Every small action can make a big difference.
Earth Day is a reminder that we all have a responsibility to care for the earth that is our home.
By taking small steps in our daily lives, we can collectively create the positive change needed to protect the planet for future generations.
Let’s celebrate Earth Day this year with a passion to build a greener and more sustainable future.
Happy Earth Day 2024.
