Nyepi Day
Nyepi is a Hindu holiday celebrated as part of the Saka New Year tradition. Usually, this holiday falls in March or April every year. This year, Nyepi Day falls on March 11, 2024.
Nyepi is characterized by a 24-hour period of absolute silence across the island of Bali. During Nyepi, no public activities are permitted, including traveling, working, or consuming food.
Rituals of Nyepi
Ahead of Nyepi Day, Hindus usually perform the Melasti ceremony. This ceremony is known as a self-purification ceremony to welcome the feast day.
With the aim of purifying oneself from all past bad deeds and throwing them into the sea, this ceremony is held on the beach and all participants wear white clothes. In Hindu beliefs, water sources such as lakes and seas are considered the water of life (tirta amerta).

In addition, there is also cleaning and purification of sacred objects belonging to the temple. The objects are paraded around the village which is intended to purify the village.
After Melasti, on the night before Nyepi, there is an Ogoh-Ogoh parade. Giant statues will be paraded around the village and then brought to an open place, usually a field or beach. These statues symbolize evil spirits or negative forces that exist in the world.

There, they will be placed together and lit up. This procession is called the Ngerupuk ceremony. The fire that burns Ogoh-Ogoh is considered a symbol of cleansing sacred energy.
Nyepi in Bali
On Nyepi day itself, all activities in Bali stop. No lights are turned on, no sounds are heard, even the airport is closed. Balinese people spend this day in silence, meditating, praying, and contemplating.
Travelers who are in Bali during Nyepi are asked to respect this tradition by staying inside their lodgings and not disturbing the peace.

Nyepi is not just a holiday, but also a time for introspection, cleansing, and restoration. The silence practiced during Nyepi symbolizes contemplation and allows the Balinese to reflect on their lives, assess their deeds, and start the new year with a calm mind and a pure heart.
