Interior Design Study Program of the Faculty of Arts and Design (FSRD) Untar held a Rattan Design Study Workshop (SPORA). This activity, which took place for the third time, was the result of cooperation with PT Aida Rattan Industry, Juno Home, and Studio Hendro Hadinata. SPORA was opened by Dean of FSRD Dr. Kurnia Setiawan, S.Sn., M.Hum, Wednesday (7/6) at Untar campus.
Indonesia is the world’s largest producer of rattan which is the basic material for furniture. This potential has initiated the Interior Design Study Program to conduct a workshop to increase appreciation and encourage innovation in the exploration of rattan furniture by students.
Through this event, students have the opportunity to learn and experiment from leading experts and practitioners in the furniture industry, especially those made from rattan, including designers. The designer profession is currently at the forefront of industry and trade because it can increase the value of a product.
The two-day event presented speakers from designers and practitioners in the furniture industry, namely Sakud and Engkan Sukarsa from PT Aida Rattan Industry, Nikko Wonoto (furniture designer and co-founder of Juno Home), and Hendro Hadinata (Studio Hendro Hadinata).
Dean of FSRD when opening the event stated that this activity was a positive initiation between design education institutions and the creative industry and the designer profession. It is hoped that students will be able to explore and produce innovations that can increase the value of rattan materials in the form of inspiring furniture designs.
In the workshop, students practiced, including exploring ideas and drawing shapes for mock-ups, to understanding the basic character and process of forming rattan-based seating facilities. Through this practice, which was directly guided by practitioners, the participants were able to produce innovative designs. (VW/YS/AW)
