Recent increase in acute kidney failure cases in children raises a concern in society. Minister of Health Budi Gunadi Sadikin said that the increasing cases have been detected since August 2022. The government has taken measures as well, including finding the cause. Budi stated that 7 out of 10 kidney failure patients in Indonesia show toxic chemicals found in syrup medicine in the blood.
In response to the findings, lecturer of the Faculty of Medicine Untar Dr. dr. Naomi Esthernita F. Dewanto, Sp.A(K) says that in general, kidney failure in children caused by genetical disorder, inflamation of kidney, infection, and autoimmune disease. Cases currently emerging are due to inflamation of kidney, caused by ethylene glycol or diethylene glycol exceeding safe limit, and currently under investigation by the authorities.
She admits that kidney failure case rarely happen to children, unless triggered genetically, but is not impossible as there are other factors that might cause it, just like what is happening now.
According to her, there are other triggering factors, such as long-term fluid insufficiency which will cause glomerulonefritis, inflamation of a kidney part that filters remains and secrete excess fluid or electrolites out of the body.
“Symptoms of kidney failure that must be watched are extensive diarrhea, vomiting, seizure, breathing difficulty, and rarely or even never urinate.
Naomi underlines patients with kidney failure not to consume too much foods and beverages rich in protein or too salty, fruits and vegetables rich in potassium such as melon, banana, orange, avocado, tomato, and beans, and dairy products.
“Aside of that, avoid sodas rich in potassium, energy drinks containing taurine and sugar, and canned foods and drinks high in preservatives, sugar, and cafeine,” she explained.
Parents are suggested to exercise their children healthy lifestyle, consume enough water to avoid dehydration, and not to consume medicine in excess, especially without doctor’s recommendation. (YS/AW)
