The rapid flow of information in the digital sphere has created new challenges for society. Amid an overwhelming volume of content that often blurs the line between facts and hoaxes, higher education institutions are expected to play a greater role in strengthening public digital literacy.
One institution undertaking this responsibility is the Faculty of Communication Sciences (Fikom) of Universitas Tarumanagara (Untar), which this year celebrates its 20th anniversary. The statement was delivered by Untar Rector Prof. Dr. Amad Sudiro, S.H., M.H., M.Kn., M.M. during the 20th Anniversary Celebration of Fikom Untar at the Auditorium of Campus I Untar, Jakarta, on Tuesday (23/06/2026).
On the occasion, Amad emphasized the importance of communication scholars contributing to the rapidly changing media landscape. According to him, advances in information technology have expanded public access to a wide range of information sources. At the same time, however, society faces the challenge of identifying accurate information amid the growing prevalence of misinformation and disinformation.
“Therefore, mitigation efforts through strengthened digital literacy are essential so that people can respond to information critically and responsibly. Fikom Untar is expected to become a ‘tuning fork’ whose resonance can be felt across all levels of society,” he said.
The 20th Anniversary Celebration of Fikom Untar carried the theme “Resonance of Feelings for the Next Generation.” The theme reflects the importance of communication that not only conveys information but also fosters empathy and connectedness within an increasingly diverse society.
The celebration of Fikom Untar’s two-decade journey also served as a moment of reflection on its achievements while reaffirming its direction for future development.
Dean of Fikom Untar, Dr. Sinta Paramita, S.I.P., M.A., expressed appreciation to the founders and all parties who have contributed to the faculty’s growth over the past two decades.
Sinta reaffirmed Fikom Untar’s commitment to serving as a platform for nurturing creative, adaptive, and globally competitive generations. This commitment is reflected in its efforts to produce competent graduates while delivering meaningful contributions to society.
The anniversary celebration was also attended by the Chair of the Tarumanagara Foundation Board, Prof. Dr. Ariawan Gunadi, S.H., M.H., along with university and foundation leaders. According to Ariawan, Fikom Untar is one of the academic programs that attracts significant interest from prospective students. This strong demand reflects the public’s confidence in the quality of education provided by the faculty.
Nevertheless, Ariawan noted that the pace of change requires educational institutions to continuously innovate. Therefore, Fikom must strengthen its academic innovations to remain relevant to industry needs and societal developments.
He also emphasized the importance of cultivating empathy, relationship-building skills, and social awareness. “In this way, graduates will not only be able to adapt to change but also make a positive contribution to society and national development,” he concluded.
