In the digital era, social media has become one of the main drivers of changes in communication patterns. Through social media platforms, people can interact, share information, and maintain relationships with friends and family. Social media strengthens connections and provides a space for positive messages to flourish.

According to Septia Winduwati, S.Sos., M.Si., a lecturer at the Faculty of Communication Sciences (Fikom) of Untar, social media serves as a gateway to knowledge, expanding insights by providing practical and relevant information. However, this convenience also requires caution due to negative impacts such as fraud, pornographic content, and other harmful materials that can be accessed through social media.

“If used wisely, social media can help strengthen social relationships and provide positive benefits through online interactions,” said Septia.

Challenges in Managing Social Relationships Through Social Media

Septia explained that managing social relationships through social media comes with various challenges. Social media makes it easier to meet new people and interact with those who share similar interests or backgrounds. It also helps expand social circles and build friendships. In the digital era, developing a personal brand through social media has become increasingly important. The way individuals present themselves online can shape how others perceive them and influence their social relationships.

However, social media can also become a source of conflict and misunderstanding. Misinterpreted messages, insensitive comments, or differences of opinion can affect interpersonal relationships.

“Personal information can sometimes be leaked or misused, making it important to understand privacy boundaries and manage account security properly,” she explained.

How to Use Social Media Effectively

To use social media effectively, individuals should actively participate in conversations as prosumers rather than merely consuming content. Social media features such as likes, comments, and shares can be utilized to interact directly with other users, creating opportunities for dialogue and the exchange of ideas.

In addition, building connections with influential individuals through comments, direct messages, or shared groups can strengthen relationships and increase opportunities to develop professional networks on social media.

“Optimizing one’s personal image by publishing content relevant to personal interests and expertise can strengthen professional identity and expand social networks,” she added.

Tips for Positive Social Media Use

To use social media positively and avoid its negative impacts, Septia shared several practical tips that can be applied in daily life.

1. Be Careful When Sharing Content
Consider whether the content aligns with your image and values, and avoid sharing information that could jeopardize employment opportunities or damage your reputation.

2. Manage Online Time Wisely
Spending excessive time on social media can disrupt productivity and contribute to anxiety. Set daily limits for social media use to maintain efficiency and balance.

3. Maintain Professional Relationships
Connecting with colleagues, clients, or business partners on social media can help sustain professionalism and strengthen workplace relationships.

4. Offer Support and Avoid Negative Comments
Responding with empathy and care when someone faces difficulties on social media can help create a positive online environment.

5. Protect Privacy and Security
Consider the potential consequences of sharing personal information and safeguard privacy to avoid the risks of data misuse or fraud.

The Importance of Education in the Digital Era

Education, particularly in the field of communication, plays an important role in helping individuals manage social relationships in the digital era. Educational institutions should teach technology-based skills, including literacy in the use of social media and collaborative platforms, to help individuals communicate effectively while understanding digital ethics.

According to Septia, education should strengthen digital communication skills, including creating content that is sensitive, relevant, and socially beneficial, participating in appropriate and positive digital forums, and understanding nonverbal cues in both text and visual communication.

Furthermore, education in the digital era should increase awareness of privacy and security risks so that individuals can protect personal information and avoid data misuse.

“Education should also introduce social media ethics, including how to interact respectfully, respect the privacy of others, and avoid negative behavior. In this way, education can equip individuals with the skills needed to manage social relationships effectively and safely in the digital world,” Septia concluded.

Privacy and Security in Social Media Use

Privacy and security play a crucial role in social media use. Awareness of these issues must be strengthened so users can understand the risks of privacy breaches and learn how to protect their personal data. Privacy settings on social media platforms, such as locking account profiles and restricting who can view content, are particularly important.

Septia added, “Account security should be enhanced by enabling two-factor authentication. Digital literacy is also key, especially for younger generations who actively use social media. The more aware users are of password management and security settings, the safer their social media experience will be.”

The Future of Social Media

Social media has revolutionized communication and interaction in Indonesia, connecting millions of people and creating dynamic digital communities. Over the past few decades, rapid developments in information and communication technology have brought significant changes to the way people communicate and interact.

The role of social media in this transformation has been particularly prominent. Its accessibility and broad reach allow people to communicate with anyone, anywhere, and at any time with just a few clicks.

Social media enables people to stay connected even when face-to-face interaction is impossible, as demonstrated during the COVID-19 pandemic. It has also empowered individuals to become content creators and storytellers, allowing voices, opinions, and ideas that were previously underrepresented in traditional media to gain greater visibility.

Nevertheless, negative impacts such as stress, anxiety, and depression caused by constant social comparison, online bullying, and information imbalance should not be overlooked.

Social media can deepen social polarization through filter bubbles and echo chambers while increasing risks related to privacy and data security. The spread of misinformation and disruptions to productivity also remain challenges that must be addressed wisely to ensure positive and healthy engagement within digital social networks.

In facing these challenges, individuals play a crucial role in managing social media responsibly. Understanding both the positive and negative aspects of social media and applying the recommended practices can help maintain a healthy balance between offline and online life.

With the right approach, social media can become a powerful tool for building and strengthening social relationships in the digital era.
