Doc: Vonny Kornellya (FSRD Untar)
World Art Day, celebrated every April 15, is an important moment to promote the advancement, dissemination, and appreciation of art in all its forms.
The choice of April 15 is not without reason. This date coincides with the birthday of Leonardo da Vinci—an iconic artist who is widely regarded as a symbol of tolerance, peace, freedom of expression, and multiculturalism. World Art Day was officially proclaimed by UNESCO during its 40th General Conference in 2019,as a tribute to the vital role of art in shaping human civilization.
As one of the leading private universities in Jakarta, Tarumanagara University (Untar) continues to demonstrate its commitment to the advancement of the arts. Through competitions, exhibitions, and various creative collaborations, Untar provides an active and inclusive space for students and the wider community to express themselves and explore their artistic ideas.
A remarkable example comes from Vonny Kornellya, a student of the Interior Design Program at the Faculty of Art and Design (FSRD) Untar, who recently brought pride to Indonesia on the international stage. Vonny won the top award for Best Design at the ASMINDO Young Furniture Designer Award (AYFDA) 2025, held on February 7, 2025. Her work was later selected to represent Indonesia at the ASEAN Design Award 2025.
Vonny’s creation—a chair made of rattan, a natural, eco-friendly, and durable material—blends modern design with the aesthetic values of Indonesia culture. In the design process, she carefully considered comfort, visual appeal, and compatibility with various contemporary interior styles.
“I wanted to create a piece that could be appreciated by both local and international audiences. Rattan is a strong material, but it’s also deeply rooted in Indonesian identity. I wanted to show that we can create something modern without losing our cultural essence,” said Vonny.
She also shared an inspiring message for young artists and designers across Indonesia:
“I hope Indonesia art and creativity will gain more recognition on the international stage. Don’t be afraid to express yourself—every creation has meaning and deserves to be appreciated.”
