The Doctor of Law Program at Universitas Tarumanagara awarded a doctoral degree to Dewa Gede Edi Praditha during an open dissertation defense held at Untar Campus I, Jakarta, on Thursday (21/5/2026).

Dewa earned the doctoral title after successfully defending his dissertation entitled “Legal Anthropology Analysis of the Kerauhan Phenomenon in Balinese Society.” The research examined the phenomenon of kerauhan, or trance conditions within Balinese traditions, from the perspectives of legal anthropology and customary law.

His study explained that kerauhan is not merely understood as a spiritual and cultural phenomenon, but also possesses social and customary legal dimensions that continue to exist within Balinese society. According to the research, the practice reflects a balance between spiritual, social, cultural, and customary values that have been preserved across generations.

He further noted that modern developments have introduced new challenges to the practice of kerauhan, including the emergence of staged trance phenomena and cultural exploitation that may affect the authenticity of the tradition.

The research employed an empirical juridical method with explanatory and descriptive-analytical approaches. The findings revealed that conflicts arising from kerauhan within Balinese customary communities are resolved through customary law mechanisms that prioritize social harmony and purification rituals.

In addition, the dissertation proposed the concept of trance verification as a preventive measure by customary institutions to distinguish between authentic and manipulative trance conditions through cultural, medical, and customary law approaches.

The open defense session was chaired by Dean of the Faculty of Law at Universitas Tarumanagara, Prof. Dr. Rasji, S.H., M.H., while the official announcement of the examination results was delivered by Rector of Universitas Tarumanagara, Prof. Dr. Amad Sudiro, S.H., M.H., M.Kn., M.M. He declared Dewa Gede Edi Praditha as the 59th Doctor of Law graduate of Universitas Tarumanagara with honors.

Also attending the session was Dean of the Faculty of Law at Universitas Mahasaraswati Denpasar, I Wayan Eka Artajaya. He expressed appreciation for Dewa’s achievement while highlighting the academic collaboration that has been established between Universitas Tarumanagara and Universitas Mahasaraswati Denpasar over the past several years. He noted that Dewa was among 25 doctoral program participants from Universitas Mahasaraswati Denpasar pursuing doctoral studies at Universitas Tarumanagara. (VC/YS)
