FK Untar Medical Team Provides Healthcare Services for Communities Affected by Sumatra Disaster

The medical team of the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Tarumanagara (FK Untar), carried out a series of community service activities under the Disaster Emergency Response Program for Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra. This program, supported by the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology (Kemendiktisaintek), includes healthcare services, psychosocial support, and the distribution of medical and non-medical assistance for disaster-affected communities.

During their assignment, the team provided general medical examinations, medical consultations, and health education, and was stationed in Agam Regency, West Sumatra.

On Monday (16/12), upon arrival at the location, the FK Untar team coordinated with the local Health Office and the Universitas Andalas Command Post. During this coordination, the team handed over medical assistance to the Health Office as part of support for emergency health response in the affected area. In addition, non-medical aid was distributed to the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) post in Agam Regency.

Activities continued on Tuesday (17/12) with medical services for disaster victims and aid distribution in Lubuk Basung, Agam Regency. On the same day, the FK Untar medical team also provided healthcare services and distributed non-medical assistance in three temporary shelters housing affected residents, as part of efforts to support basic needs during the recovery period.

On Wednesday (18/12), the team conducted medical services at several posts, including the Nagari Bayuah Post located at the Bayuah Village Office, the Kampung Jambu Hamlet Post at the Kampung Jambu Islamic Elementary School (MDA), and the Sawah Lie Post at the Chairul Muminin Mosque. At these locations, residents received general health check-ups, medical treatment, health education, and psychosocial support through empathetic communication and motivational assistance.

The series of activities concluded on Thursday (19/12) with healthcare services for the community in Nagari Maninjau. The presence of the FK Untar medical team in this area was warmly welcomed by residents, who utilized the services to check their physical health while also receiving mental support.

The Dean of FK Untar, Dr. dr. Noer Saelan Tadjoedin., Sp.KJ, who accompanied the medical team, stated that the program was designed to address both the physical and mental health needs of disaster-affected communities. The psychosocial approach was implemented to help reduce anxiety and strengthen mental resilience in emergency situations.

Sementara itu, Ketua Tim Kegiatan Dr. dr. Shirly Gunawan., Sp.FK menegaskan bahwa keterlibatan FK Untar merupakan bagian dari pelaksanaan tridarma perguruan tinggi. Melalui kegiatan ini, Untar berupaya hadir tidak hanya sebagai penyedia layanan medis, tetapi juga sebagai mitra masyarakat dalam membangun rasa aman, ketenangan, dan harapan selama proses pemulihan pascabencana.

In addition to providing healthcare services, the Untar medical team consisting of 10 volunteers—three lecturers and young doctors who are FK Untar alumni and clinical clerkship participants—also brought medical and non-medical logistical support tailored to field needs. (YS)
