The commemoration of Youth Pledge Day every October 28 serves as a moment of reflection for Indonesia’s younger generation to reaffirm the spirit of unity born from the Second Youth Congress in 1928. The pledge of “One Homeland, One Nation, One Language” stands not only as a historic milestone but also as an enduring source of inspiration for today’s youth to contribute to the nation’s progress.

Now, nearly a century later, the spirit of the Youth Pledge faces new challenges in the context of the digital age and artificial intelligence (AI). Amid rapid technological advancement, Indonesian youth are challenged not merely to become technology users but also innovators capable of creating solutions grounded in national values and humanity.

As a generation living in an era of disruption, university students play a crucial role as the frontline in maintaining a balance between technological progress and the nation’s noble values. Through research, creativity, and cross-disciplinary collaboration, Indonesian youth can become key drivers of ethical, equitable, and people-centered digital transformation.

The commemoration of Youth Pledge Day also provides an opportunity for the academic community to reaffirm its commitment to sustainable development. The spirit of collaboration, innovation, and social responsibility inherited from the youth of 1928 remains highly relevant in supporting the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), and SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions).

Guided by the spirit of the Youth Pledge, young people are expected to view technological advancement not as a threat but as an opportunity to create meaningful solutions for the nation. The values of unity, cooperation, and social responsibility should serve as the foundation for every innovation developed by Indonesia’s youth.

Let us continue the legacy of our predecessors by upholding unity and harnessing technology and artificial intelligence to advance Indonesia’s progress and sustainable future.
