Every 29 September, Indonesia commemorates National Bachelor’s Day. This commemoration serves as a moment of reflection as well as appreciation for the important role of graduates who have completed higher education and contributed significantly to national progress.

National Bachelor’s Day was first initiated in 2014 by the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia. The date of 29 September was chosen as it coincides with the birth of Raden Mas Panji Sosrokartono, who is recognized as the first Indonesian to earn a bachelor’s degree at the Polytechnische School in the Netherlands. Sosrokartono stands as a symbol of perseverance and dedication in pursuing knowledge, as well as a role model for future generations.

The meaning of this commemoration goes beyond honoring graduates who have completed their studies. It also serves as a moral encouragement for students to continuously develop themselves, innovate, and serve society. Students, as future graduates, are expected not only to pursue education for the sake of obtaining a degree, but also to apply their knowledge for the advancement of social, cultural, economic development, and national progress.

As a higher education institution, Universitas Tarumanagara (Untar) remains committed to producing graduates who are excellent, highly integrity-driven, and globally competitive. Untar consistently prepares graduates who are ready to adapt to changing times while making meaningful contributions to society.

This was emphasized by the Rector of Untar, Prof. Dr. Amad Sudiro, S.H., M.H., M.Kn., M.M., during his remarks at the 85th Graduation Ceremony, where he highlighted the important role of graduates as agents of change.

“Untar graduates must be able to become innovators as well as agents of change who bring positive impact to society. Sustainable innovation is the key for our nation to be able to compete at the global level,” he said.

National Bachelor’s Day serves as a reminder that knowledge is an essential asset in facing the challenges of the times. With the spirit of struggle inherited from predecessors, young graduates—including Untar alumni—are expected to continue becoming driving forces of national progress, carrying the values of innovation, integrity, and sustainability in every step of their dedication.
