Indonesia is a country rich in vocabulary, with countless beautiful words and phrases that can warm the heart when read and reflected upon. There are many forms of writing in the Indonesian language that we encounter, one of which is poetry. Every April 28th, National Poetry Day is celebrated in Indonesia.

This commemoration was established to honor the passing of Chairil Anwar, a prominent figure in modern Indonesian literature who transformed poetry into a more free-spirited and bold form. This moment serves as a reminder that poetry holds a special place in our culture, not only as an art form but also as a reflection of the soul, the voice of the times, and a bridge between generations.

Poetry has evolved over time, from oral traditions to digital media, from performance stages to the pages of books. Poets like Sapardi Djoko Damono bring emotions to life with simple yet meaningful word choices. WS Rendra ignited social awareness through passionate poetry. Toeti Heraty introduced the female voice into the world of literature, while Joko Pinurbo presented the irony of everyday life with his distinctive style. These works show that Indonesian poetry is rich in color and meaning.

The celebration of National Poetry Day can be observed in various ways, such as participating in writing competitions, attending poetry reading events, and of course, by reading more books. By frequently reading literary works, especially poetry from Indonesian authors, we not only broaden our horizons but also enrich our inner selves. Local poetry books contain a variety of perspectives on love, humanity, nature, history, and social critique that deserve appreciation.

Literature and poetry play an important role in shaping sensitivity, empathy, and imagination. Therefore, it is essential to foster a reading culture from an early age. The works of Indonesian authors and poets, both classical and contemporary, must continue to be supported and introduced to the younger generation. Through reading, we get to know the roots of our culture and open spaces for healthy dialogue in national life.

National Poetry Day is not only a form of respect for poets but also a reminder that words can move hearts and change the way we view the world. By continuing to read and support Indonesian literary works, we help preserve the continuity of a rich and meaningful cultural heritage. Happy National Poetry Day, April 28th. Let us celebrate the power of language and the beauty of the soul through poetry and books. (VC/AJ/YS/VC)
