Every January 25th, Indonesia commemorates National Nutrition and Food Day (HGN) to raise public awareness about the importance of balanced nutrition and nutritious food consumption in achieving a better quality of life. In 2025, the celebration of HGN becomes even more relevant amid global challenges such as rising obesity rates, malnutrition—a condition caused by an imbalance between nutritional intake and the body’s needs—and various lifestyle-related diseases.

This year, the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia (Kemenkes) carries the theme “Balanced Nutrition for an Outstanding Generation“. This theme emphasizes the importance of a healthy and nutritious diet in supporting the growth and development of a smart and healthy younger generation, while also serving as a preventive measure against various non-communicable diseases that may arise from an unbalanced diet.

The government, through the Ministry of Health (Kemenkes), actively organizes various educational programs to enhance public awareness of the importance of consuming nutritious food. In line with this effort, the government is also implementing a nutritious food program in schools.

The Importance of Balanced Nutrition

Balanced nutrition plays a crucial role in:
1. Maintaining overall health: Ensuring the body receives sufficient energy and nutrients for daily activities.
2. Supporting optimal growth: Especially for children and adolescents.
3. Repairing body tissues: Facilitating cell and tissue regeneration.
4. Strengthening the immune system: Reducing the risk of infections and diseases.

However, unhealthy and nutrient-poor eating habits are becoming increasingly common, especially in urban areas. A fast-paced lifestyle and a lack of nutritional awareness lead many people to rely on fast food, which is high in calories but low in essential nutrients.

Steps to Maintain Balanced Nutrition

The role of both the government and society is crucial in addressing nutritional issues, including malnutrition in children and adults. Here are some steps that can be taken:
1. Adopting a balanced diet – Consume a variety of foods, including fruits, vegetables, animal and plant-based proteins, and healthy carbohydrate sources.
2. Reducing processed food consumption – Avoid fast food and foods high in sugar, salt, and trans fats.
3. Supporting local food sources – Choose nutrient-rich local ingredients such as fish, legumes, and various Indonesian fruits and vegetables.
4. Enhancing nutritional literacy – Utilize nutrition information from books, social media, seminars, or training sessions provided by health institutions.

By commemorating Nutrition and Food Day 2025, it is hoped that society will become more aware of the importance of a healthy and nutritious diet. Balanced nutrition is not just a theory but a real investment in both individual and national health.

Happy National Nutrition and Food Day 2025! Let’s create a healthier and more outstanding Indonesia through nutritious eating habits.
