It has been one month since the beginning of this semester. For new students, this is a transition from high school to college which often brings various challenges. In fact, there are many changes and differences that will be accepted. Changes include adjustments in terms of study habits, time management, and how to interact with fellow students from various backgrounds.
On campus, students will face greater responsibility in terms of managing class schedules and assignments, and will be required to make more personal and academic decisions. However, there is no need to be afraid to grow in college, because of course every campus will facilitate and support the success of its students in the world of lectures both in academic and non-academic fields. As a new student, the mandatory thing that needs to be prepared to face the world of college is adaptation.
Adaptation is the process of adjusting to changes or new environments to be able to function effectively and comfortably. Students need to adjust to new learning methods, where it is very likely that each lecturer’s teaching style is different, more complex assignments, and the need to learn independently.
How to quickly learn to adapt and recognize the new environment in order to help learning activities in the campus environment:
1. Recognize the campus environment
It is important for new students to recognize the campus environment in order to know where buildings and classes are located, so that it does not take time to find a place on campus. It also does not hurt to take advantage of the facilities provided by the university such as libraries, sports halls, labs, and so on that help develop students’ interests and talents.
2. Get used to being active in class
Participate in class to show activeness, starting from discussions with lecturers and friends to answering questions when the lecturer asks in the material presentation session.
3. Time management
Of course in the world of college there are not only classes that can be followed by students, there are also Student Organizations (Ormawa) or even committees and volunteers for an event that can be followed. However, if we choose to take part in activities outside of class, do not put aside our main task and goal in college, namely learning. Time management will be needed here, start setting priorities and get used to making schedule planning.
4. Take references from various sources
In learning activities on campus, students are free to seek answers or knowledge from various references. No need to rely on one source or what is only explained by the lecturer in class. There are lots of journals, websites, books, and even utilizing social media functions well to add insight.
5. Building relationships with lecturers and friends
Creating good relationships as a student with lecturers and fellow students is important to help achieve success in college. Lecturers can provide academic support, guidance, and research or internship opportunities. Meanwhile, fellow students can be a source of emotional support, motivation, and collaboration on assignments or projects.
Doing some of the points above, at least, will help you start college with enough preparation. Make good use of your college time with activities that can develop yourself.
