Vesak Day is one of the most important celebrations in the Buddhist tradition. It commemorates three important events in the life of Siddharta Gautama, later known as the Buddha. These events include his birth, attainment of perfect enlightenment, and his death (parinibbāna).

History and Meaning of Vesak

Vesak is celebrated on the full moon of the month of Vaisakha. This year, Vesak falls on May 23, 2024. This day not only commemorates the life of the Buddha, but also emphasizes his teachings of love, peace, and understanding.

It is a moment of reflection for Buddhists to reflect on their worldly lives, cleanse their hearts, and renew their commitment to the Buddha’s teachings.

Vesak Celebration in Indonesia

In Indonesia, as a country with diverse religions and cultures, Vesak Day is celebrated with solemnity and meaning, especially among Buddhists.

Borobudur Temple, one of the UNESCO world heritage sites located in Magelang, Central Java is the center of the Vesak celebration.

Thousands of Buddhists from various regions, even from abroad, gathered to take part in a series of ceremonies that lasted from morning to night.

The Series of Vesak Ceremonies

1. Taking Holy Water
The ceremony begins with the collection of holy water from springs that are considered sacred, such as Umbul Jumprit, Temanggung. This holy water is then used in various rituals to cleanse oneself and the environment.

2. Taking the Eternal Flame
The eternal flame taken from Mrapen, Grobogan, Central Java, symbolizes enlightenment and a never-ending spirit. This fire is lit in the courtyard of Borobodur Temple and becomes an important part of the ceremony.

3. Pindapata
A procession where monks walk in a line to receive food donations from devotees. This symbolizes humility and sharing.

4. Meditation and Puja Bhakti
Buddhists meditate together, recite parittas (holy prayers), and participate in puja bhakti (ritual worship) as a form of respect to the Buddha.

5. Lantern Release
In closing, thousands of lanterns are released into the air as a symbol of hope and prayer for world peace. The sight of lanterns lighting up the night sky around Borobudur Temple is a highly anticipated and magical moment.
