Every May 1, the world celebrates Labor Day as a tribute to the struggles of workers around the world.

This day is not only a moment to appreciate the contribution of workers in building society, but also to reflect on the challenges still faced by workers in various sectors.

History of Labor Day

Labor Day has rich and meaningful historical roots. In the late 19th century, inhumane working conditions and exploitation of workers created strong labor movements in various parts of the world.

On May 1, 1886, thousands of workers in the United States went on strike to demand fairer treatment, including more humane working hours.

These demonstrations culminated in the Haymarket Incident in Chicago, a riot and raid that resulted in deaths and injuries to workers and police.

Since then, labor struggles have brought significant changes to working conditions around the world.

Through strikes, demonstrations, and collective bargaining, workers have gained basic rights such as fair working hours, decent wages, the right to join unions, and better workplace safety.

Workers contributions are not only limited to the industrial sector, but also include areas such as education, health, technology, and services.

While there has been progress in the protection of workers’ rights, there are still many challenges faced by workers today.

Globalization, technology, and economic change have brought about a transformation in the world of work, creating unemployment and inequalities that need to be addressed.

Disparities in wages, unsafe working conditions, discrimination, and lack of access to social security remain relevant issues.

On this Labor Day, let us appreciate the struggles and contributions of workers in building a better society.

It is a good time to commit to continue fighting for workers’ rights, addressing inequalities, and creating an inclusive and fair work environment for all.

As part of the global community, let us unite in a spirit of solidarity to celebrate the courage and perseverance of workers around the world.

Together, we can create a future where everyone has an equal opportunity to thrive and contribute. (KJ/AW/KJ)
