Faculty of Arts and Design (FSRD) Untar held an International Design Seminar to celebrate the 29th Anniversary of FSRD Untar, online, Thursday (21/9).

Rector of Untar Prof. Dr. Ir. Agustinus Purna Irawan, M.T., M.M., I.P.U., A.E. in his speech hopes that the international seminar could encourage multinational collaboration between universities, supporting Untar’s internationalization program.

“FSRD can support Untar’s vision to have an impact locally and internationally,” said Rector.

The first speaker, Dr. Hanif Khairi from Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Malaysia, delivered a presentation entitled “Embrace, Amalgamate, Celebrate Cultural Hybridity”. Dr. Hanif discussed the important role of culture in shaping the world of arts and design.

Dr. Hanif advised art designers to be able to identify their target audience, according to their culture and characteristics, in order to have a positive impact on many people.

Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Design Dr. Kurnia Setiawan, S.Sn., M.Hum., who attended as the second speaker, explained one of his multicultural collaborations in the 2021 Global Intercultural Project Experience (GIPE) project for Puspanita Eco Spirit Center, an ecological learning and training center located in Bogor.

In GIPE 2021, Dr. Kurnia, together with university representatives from Indonesia, Germany, Peru, and Namibia, managed Puspanita Eco Spirit Center in terms of design, operations, and sustainability. The goal is to build awareness of nature and human relationships involving sustainability and education.

The seminar also included Dr. Louie T. Navarro, M.A., Ph.D. from the University of Santo Tomas, Philippines as a speaker. The talk topic “GLOCAL: GLObal Problems, LOCAL Solutions” addressed global social problems, specifically pollution from buildings and population growth.

Dr. Louie discussed the current building process in the Philippines that generates a total of 40% of energy emissions, 11% of which comes from building materials such as steel, cement, and glass, materials commonly found in modern buildings.

Therefore, the process of building a traditional house is interesting to learn more about because it contributes little to energy emissions.

This international seminar is one of a series of celebrations for the 29th Anniversary of FSRD, which falls on 7 August 2023. The series of events continued with the International Exhibition on 14 September to 30 October 2023. (VW/AW)
