Fikom National Conference Discusses Popular Culture Trend in Society

The Faculty of Communication Science Universitas Tarumanagara (Fikom Untar) held the National Humanist Communication Conference (KNKH) titled “Pop Culture, Communication, and Society”.

KNKH 2022 became the fifth year KNKH, opened by Rector of Untar Prof. Dr. Ir. Agustinus Purna Irawan, M.T., M.M., I.P.U., AE online on Thursday, (17/11). In his welcoming speech, Rector hopes KNKH could be an opportunity to discuss, plan, and recommend positive matters to prepare the future.

The speakers of KNKH 2022 were Professor of Susastra and Cultural Studies Prof. Manneke Budiman, S.S., M.A., Ph.D., Inaya Wahid (social and cultural activist), Lusia Savitri Setyo Utami, S.Sos., M.Si. (Fikom Untar lecturer), and as the moderator Dr. Muhammad Adi Pribadi, S.E., M.I.B., M.Com., CPR.

Prof. Manneke in his lecture emphasized that communication in popular culture sends messages to the audience, and aimed not only to show something, but also hide something.

“Distorted messages sent massively and continuously produced a new phenomenon in popular culture, namely hoax or fake news,” stated Prof. Manneke.

Meanwhile, Inaya spotlighted the pop culture carried out by younger generations. Western pop culture is such a big unstoppable wave. “Perhaps, what we call as a legacy could be a pop culture in its era,” she added.

Fikom lecturer Lusia Savitri discussed on K-Pop as a pop culture, which occurs massively in Indonesia. In her opinion, Indonesia has become a potential hallyu market, especially post-pandemic era.

KNKH is a routine yearly national level held by Fikom. Dean of Fikom Dr. Riris Loisa, M.Si. stated that this conference
was aimed to facilitate ideas and research outcomes, as well as experience of academicians and practitioners relating to humanist communication, which respectful towards others in the context of current society.

“I hope this conference not only broaden the knowledge of participating participants, but also positively impacts the society who accessed the outcomes of this conference in the form of books and journals, in order to build respectful communication culture,” said the Dean.

Head of KNKH 2022 Committee Dr. Moehammad Gafar Yoedtadi, M.Si. explained that the topic of pop culture was chosen due to the current social phenomena. Social media power in creating trending topics which in turn produce new cultures, popular culture carried by media for mass consumption.

This two-day conference was participated by lecturers and students of Universitas Islam Riau, Universitas Padjajaran, Universitas Multimedia Nusantara, Universitas Pancasila, Universitas Sebelas Maret, Sekolah Tinggi Ilmu Komunikasi dan Sekretari Tarakanita, and Institut Teknologi dan Bisnis Kalbis.
