Rector of Untar, Prof. Dr. Ir. Agustinus Purna Irawan, M.T., M.M., I.P.U., ASEAN Eng., appeared as a guest speaker in a Live Talk Show organized by Katolikana TV and broadcast through its YouTube channel and radio station on Monday (6/5).
The talk show, themed “The Red Flags of Academic Ethics,” discussed the phenomenon of academic ethics violations within higher education institutions.
The Rector explained that many lecturers and professors have been involved in unethical practices in scientific writing, including plagiarism, unauthorized co-authorship, and the manipulation of research findings.
According to the Rector, the publication of scientific papers, as part of the Tri Dharma of Higher Education, plays an important role in building a lecturer’s academic reputation. This, he noted, has led some individuals to take shortcuts in order to gain recognition and advance their academic positions in a relatively short period of time.
The Rector also encouraged lecturers and researchers to build strong professional networks and supportive partnerships that enable mutual encouragement and accountability.
“For young lecturers and students, the key aspect that must be emphasized is ethics. Ethics in research and ethics in publication must be strongly upheld so that they become good and lasting habits,” the Rector concluded.
He expressed hope that the talk show would serve as an initial step toward fostering a more honest and transparent academic environment for the betterment of education in the future. (LA/AW/KJ)
