Every year on July 14, Indonesia commemorates National Tax Day. The occasion aims to raise public awareness about the importance of taxes in national development and encourage tax compliance among taxpayers.

Taxes serve as the backbone of Indonesia’s economy, making a significant contribution to financing various government programs and projects designed to improve public welfare.

History of National Tax Day

National Tax Day was established through the Director General of Taxes Decree No. KEP-313/PJ/2017 on December 22, 2017. The designation is based on July 14, 1945, a significant moment in the history of Indonesia’s taxation organization during the early post-independence period, reflecting noble values and the spirit of struggle in supporting the life of the Indonesian nation.

The commemoration serves as a tribute to the nation’s historical struggle, strengthens the identity of the Directorate General of Taxes (DGT), and motivates DGT employees to continue their dedication to Indonesia.

Why Taxes Matter

Taxes are the primary source of state revenue used to finance key sectors such as education, healthcare, infrastructure, and social welfare. Through the taxation system, the government can redistribute national wealth to help reduce social and economic inequality within society.

Tax revenues are also used to fund development projects that improve the quality of life and support economic growth.

Tax Awareness and Compliance

Increasing public awareness of the importance of taxes is a crucial step toward ensuring tax compliance. Educational campaigns highlighting the benefits of taxation and the penalties for tax violations must continue to be promoted.

As the younger generation, university students play an important role in fostering tax awareness. Tax education should be introduced from an early stage, both through school curricula and extracurricular activities.

Untar and Tax Awareness

As one of Indonesia’s leading educational institutions, Untar also plays a role in promoting tax awareness among students. Through various seminars, workshops, and academic programs related to economics and taxation, Untar strives to equip students with adequate knowledge of the importance of taxes.

Through the Humanities course, all students receive an introduction to the importance of fulfilling tax obligations through a Tax Seminar. This initiative is intended to help students understand their future roles and responsibilities as taxpayers.

With strong awareness and compliance across all levels of society, Indonesia can continue progressing toward a more advanced and prosperous future. Let this commemoration serve as a momentum for all of us to support and contribute to national development through tax compliance.
