Advancements in information technology have created a new reality in which nearly all aspects of human activity now take place in the digital sphere. However, alongside these conveniences come ethical and legal challenges that require individuals to act more responsibly and thoughtfully in cyberspace.
Lecturer at the Faculty of Law of Untar, Dr. Moody R. Syailendra, S.H., M.H., emphasized the importance of understanding the roles of digital ethics and digital law in fostering a healthy and equitable internet ecosystem. “Ethics serves as a moral guideline with a preventive function, while law serves to uphold justice when violations have already occurred,” he explained.
According to Dr. Moody, many violations in the digital space stem from a lack of ethical awareness among internet users, including the unauthorized sharing of personal data, copyright infringement, and hate speech on social media platforms. He noted that Indonesia already has a clear legal framework through the Electronic Information and Transactions Law (ITE Law), the Personal Data Protection Law (PDP Law), and the Copyright Law.
Beyond legal regulations, Dr. Moody stressed that digital literacy should also be built upon awareness of values and character. “A single click can have significant consequences. Therefore, every user must understand the moral responsibility behind every digital action,” he said.
He also highlighted the crucial role of the younger generation, particularly university students, in fostering an ethical digital culture. “Young people must become pioneers. Use social media to share positive content, respect privacy, and promote values of kindness and knowledge,” he added.
Through various academic activities and scientific publications, the Faculty of Law of Untar remains committed to enhancing awareness of digital law and ethics among students. This approach aligns with Untar’s vision of producing academically excellent graduates who possess strong character and are well-prepared to compete in the digital era.
“Being a good digital citizen is not only about avoiding violations but also about making positive contributions to society. The digital world should be a civilized, fair, and beneficial space for everyone,” Dr. Moody concluded.
