During the 85th Graduation Ceremony of Tarumanagara University (Untar), held at the Jakarta International Convention Center (JICC), a special performance took the stage through a traditional creative dance called Tari Asa Nirwana. This dance was a work by students from the Faculty of Psychology (FPsi) at Untar, who are members of the extracurricular unit Padmanagara.
Tari Asa Nirwana is inspired by the lives of a group of women in a village in Cirebon who diligently and gracefully practice the art of batik-making. The dance highlights Cirebon’s iconic batik motif, Mega Mendung, which carries deep meanings: peace, serenity, hope, and prosperity. The cloud-shaped motif in the batik symbolizes nirwana—a vast, eternal, and liberated realm—which serves as the central philosophy in the narrative of this dance.
The dance was choreographed by students from the Faculty of Psychology (FPsi) under the guidance of FPsi lecturer Untung Subroto, M.Psi., Psychologist. Beyond the dance movements, the performance also featured an animated illustration of the batik-making process, created by students from the Faculty of Art and Design (FSRD), along with an original soundtrack composed by FPsi students.
As a form of appreciation for the originality of this artistic work, the story, illustrations, and musical composition of Tari Asa Nirwana have officially received Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) certification.
One of the dancers who took part in the performance was Sherly Amanda Aprilia Putri, who also graduated on the same day. Tari Asa Nirwana accompanied the reading of the Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi by the graduates, adding a cultural and local wisdom touch to the graduation celebration.
Through this performance, Untar reaffirms its commitment to preserving Indonesian cultural heritage while fostering creativity and interdisciplinary collaboration among its students. (VC/YS/AJ)
