The clean water crisis has become one of the world’s greatest challenges today, with the increasing human population, uncontrolled urbanization, and the impacts of climate change. Various human activities have worsened the situation, causing air pollution, increasing flood risks, and threatening the sustainability of future generations.

This was conveyed by Dr. Ir. Wati Asriningsih Pranoto, M.T., during her oration titled “Harvesting Rainwater for a Sustainable Future: The Role of the Younger Generation in Overcoming the Water Crisis and Floods,” at the 85th Untar Graduation Ceremony, held on Sunday, May 11, 2025, at the Jakarta International Convention Center (JICC).

Wati, who serves as the Head of the Civil Engineering Master’s Program, stated that rainwater harvesting is not just an alternative but a real solution that supports wise water management while also reducing the risk of flooding.

“This process involves collecting and storing rainwater for future use. This strategy also aligns with Goal 6 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which is to ensure availability and sustainable management of clean water and sanitation for all,” she added.

This compelling fact highlights that the use of simple technology, such as rainwater harvesting, can be a concrete step in addressing global challenges faced by all living beings on Earth. At the end of her oration, Wati encouraged the younger generation to actively participate in creating innovative solutions. (VC/YS)
