The development of technology and the changing needs of the global industry require the integration of artificial intelligence, advanced technology, and collaboration between humans and robots to create more adaptive, environmentally friendly, and personalized manufacturing solutions. The goal is to improve efficiency, productivity, and competitiveness in the face of the challenges of the Industry 5.0 era.

This was conveyed by Tim Pasang, Ph.D., Chair of the Engineering Design and Manufacturing Department at Western Michigan University, during the International Guest Lecture titled “Manufacturing and Materials Engineering in the Era of Industrial 5.0,” held at Building L, Rooms 609 & 611, Campus I of Tarumanagara University (Untar) on Thursday, May 8, 2025.

In his presentation, Tim Pasang explained that the Industrial 5.0 revolution brings new challenges in manufacturing and materials engineering. Collaboration between humans, robots, and cognitive systems is the key to achieving smarter and more personalized production. By utilizing advanced manufacturing technology and digital transformation, industries can enhance product efficiency and quality through automation, early defect detection, real-time monitoring, and the reduction of waste and operational costs.

The guest lecture is a joint initiative of the Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Industrial Engineering study programs at the Faculty of Engineering (FT) Untar, as part of an effort to strengthen international collaboration and enhance the competitiveness of graduates at the global level. Students were invited to understand the application of manufacturing innovation and materials engineering in advanced countries, while also preparing themselves to face the rapidly evolving and complex technological transformation.

The Secretary of the Mechanical Engineering Bachelor’s Program at FT Untar, Didi Widya Utama, S.T., M.T., Ph.D., emphasized the importance of international exposure for students. “This event provides students with the opportunity to understand global perspectives, follow innovation trends, and learn the scientific approaches applied by academics and practitioners worldwide,” he said. He hopes that this guest lecture will equip students to be more prepared to innovate in the Industry 5.0 era, which demands harmonious integration between humans, technology, and smart production systems.

One of the participants, Kristofer Severiano Dinata, a student of the Mechanical Engineering Program at FT Untar, shared the benefits he gained from the event. “I learned that there are specific methods and approaches that can be used to solve problems more effectively. I even see opportunities to further explore this field and make it a direction for my professional development in the future,” he said.

As a commitment to enriching students’ global perspective, the guest lecture was held both in-person and online, with dozens of faculty members and students from various study programs at the Faculty of Engineering Untar participating.
