Engagement in politics is not reserved for a select group—it is a collective responsibility of all citizens, including students from various academic disciplines. Politics is not merely about elections or power; it is a means to achieve the welfare of the people.

This was conveyed by Ir. Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, M.M., during his appearance as a speaker at the Critical Reading Class (CRC) 2025, an event organized by the Strategic Studies Division (Kastrat) of the Student Executive Board of Tarumanagara University (BEM Untar). The event, held on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, at the Auditorium of Untar Campus I, carried the theme: “Generation Z: A New Voice Transforming the Economic and Political Landscape.”

“Politics is not just about elections or power. It’s about working to improve the welfare of the people. Even students who are not majoring in law can contribute by raising awareness, critiquing policies, and cultivating sensitivity through small yet impactful actions,” emphasized Basuki, who is commonly known as Ahok.

Ahok encouraged students to become a generation that dares to think independently and act according to their conscience. “As public officials, leave a legacy of service for the next generation. As young people, train yourselves to be agents of change with a clear mind and a sincere heart,” said the 15th Governor of Jakarta.

The CRC received an enthusiastic response from Untar students, who filled the auditorium. The event was also attended by Untar Rector, Prof. Dr. Amad Sudiro, S.H., M.H., M.Kn., M.M.

The Chairperson of CRC 2025, Charisse Evania Tansir, stated that this event was born out of a shared awareness of Gen Z’s potential as agents of social change. Echoing Charisse’s remarks, Untar Student President Albert Tan added that CRC is expected to raise political awareness among students, even if not all of them choose to be directly involved in politics.

CRC 2025 served as a meaningful platform for Untar students—and the younger generation in general—to realize that contributing to the nation doesn’t require holding a position of power. It simply begins with awareness, concern, and unwavering principles. (VC/YS)
